4 - Move Your Catalog & Photographs to Your Hard Drive

You've been using a "portable" Lightroom.

Lightroom is on your flash drive.

You'll want to move your Lightroom catalog—and the photographs that are in the catalog—to your hard drive on your computer.

Overview

You're going to:

1) Select the Lightroom catalog and photographs on your flash drive.

2) Copy them.

Windows: Ctrl + c

Mac: Cmd + c

3) Paste them into Pictures.

Windows: Ctrl + v

Mac: Cmd + v

Don't Worry

There are many steps below, making the task look difficult.

But it's actually easy to do.

There are many steps because the tutorial is written for computer beginners.

If you've copied and pasted before, you'll zip through the steps.

Windows

1) Close Lightroom.

2) Plug in your flash drive.

3) Press the Windows key + e.

The Windows key looks like a wavy flag.

It's to the left of the space bar.

4) On the left side of the window, scroll down to your flash drive.

5) Click your flash drive to open it up.

6) Hold down the Ctrl key and click on the Lightroom folders.

7) Release the Ctrl key.

8) Press Ctrl + c.

All of the Lightroom folders are now copied to the clipboard.

9) Press the Windows key + e.

10) On the left side of the window, scroll down to Pictures.

11) Click on Pictures to open it up.

12) Press Ctrl + v.

The Lightroom folders are pasted into Pictures.

Open Lightroom

Do not click the Lightroom icon in the task bar to open the program.

Instead, do the following.

13) Go to Pictures.

14) Click the folder called Lightroom Catalog to open it up.

15) Click the Lightroom Catalog file.

Lightroom opens.

When opening Lightroom in the future, click the Lightroom icon in the task bar.

When You Do Your Next Import

Lightroom is set to import photographs into the Lightroom Photos folder on your flash drive.

When you do your next import, click the menu located in the upper-right corner of the Import window and select Other Destination.

Navigate to the Lightroom Photos folder in Pictures and click Select Folder.

Mac

1) Close Lightroom.

2) Plug in your flash drive.

3) Go to Finder by clicking the blue two-faces icon on the left end of the Dock.

4) On the left side of the Finder window, under Devices, click your flash drive to open it up.

5) Hold down the Cmd key and click on the Lightroom folders.

6) Release the Cmd key.

7) Press Cmd + c.

All of the Lightroom folders are now copied to the clipboard.

8) Go to Finder and click Desktop.

9) Press Cmd + v.

The Lightroom folders are pasted on your Desktop.

Open Lightroom

Do not click the Lightroom icon in the Dock to open the program.

Instead, do the following.

10) Go to your Desktop.

11) Click the folder called Lightroom Catalog to open it up.

12) Click the Lightroom Catalog file.

Lightroom opens.

When opening Lightroom in the future, click the Lightroom icon in the Dock.

When You Do Your Next Import

Lightroom is set to import photographs into the Lightroom Photos folder on your flash drive.

When you do your next import, click the menu located in the upper-right corner of the Import window and select Other Destination.

Navigate to the Lightroom Photos folder on your Desktop and click Select Folder.
